PHOTOS: The Gaza families obliterated in just 51 days - Out of the 2,200 Palestinians killed in last summer’s assault on the Gaza Strip, over 80 percent were civilians. Nearly 150 families lost three or more relatives, with some families disappearing entirely. Activestills’ Anne Paq returns to Gaza to tell the story behind the numbers.

Photography: Anne Paq / Activestills.org, Editing: Shiraz Grinbaum / Activestills.org - (...)  I went back to Gaza in September with the idea of documenting some of these families, starting with the ones I encountered during the summer. What happened to them? What remains of their memories, and how can the ones left behind go on with their life? What about the injured, the widows and the orphans left behind?

Long lists of names with ages of people was published, but I wanted to see the faces — to find the old photos from their photo albums. I wanted to get the stories out. I wanted these families to be remembered. >>>

VIDEO - Gaza: Deadly Assaults - People & Power investigates two deadly attacks by the Israeli army during the 2014 war on Gaza. - The Israeli assault on Gaza in 2014 cost the lives of 72 Israelis and more than 2,100 Palestinians.

The attacks on the neighbourhoods of Shujayea and Rafah caused wide-scale killing and injuries to civilians and colossal structural damage. In both cases massive military force was applied in densely populated areas; so disproportionate that even many Israeli supporters of the conflict were aghast at the consequences and became fearful that the Israeli army could be held accountable for war crimes.

Many believe the assaults were not driven by military logic and could not even pretend to claim any real tactical or strategic merit, but were instead motivated by animus and a desire for revenge.

But at least in the attack on Rafah in southern Gaza on August 1, 2014, another important imperative was at play, the so-called Hannibal Directive.

A top secret order of the Israeli army's General Staff, the Hannibal Directive was first devised in 1986, stipulating measures to be taken when an Israeli soldier is captured during combat. Its purpose is to prevent the enemy from escaping with that soldier, even if it means endangering the soldier's life - and the lives of civilians in the vicinity.

It has been executed a number of times since then, but last year, on Black Friday as it has become known, the Israeli army invoked the Hannibal Directive to its most destructive effect yet. >>>

One year later, Gaza is still in crisis - Robert Ross - “The real victims of the war are the survivors,” my friend Hamza, a Palestinian journalist, told me earlier this month, as we drank mango juice at a beach café in Gaza City. Indeed, despite 12 months of relative peace, Gazans are still enduring the aftermath of three Israeli wars in the past six years, an ongoing Israeli and Egyptian imposed blockade, a crippled economy, and internal political strife.

“Everyone here—100 percent of the people—are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder,” Hamza said. Just moments earlier, he and his brother instinctively ducked their heads upon hearing a nearby firework explode. This sentiment was echoed numerous times by the doctors, public health officials, journalists, artists, and aid workers I spoke with throughout my visit to Gaza.

“The war ended on the 26th of August, 2014,” said Dr. Ghada al-Jadba, the Chief Field Health Program officer for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA). “But another crisis began. You will see the destruction of the houses but behind the houses you will see more and more destruction of the people. Behind each house, there will be a very sad story, a disaster, a humanitarian disaster.” Hamza and another journalist, Jehad, took me to Beit Hanoun and Shujayia, where some of the worst >>>

AIPAC And The Treaty; An Illustration Of The Demise of Democracy - Joe Clifford - The great issue of the day, the approval or rejection of the nuclear treaty with Iran, illustrates the demise of democracy and just how far “democracy” has fallen. The treaty issue can also be used to demonstrate the death of the US Congress as a representative body, as a result of having sold their collective soul to a special interest group, while forsaking the American people.

The nuclear treaty with Iran is a no brainer. The American public support it, the world supports it, nuclear experts support it, all 5 nations who helped in the treaty negotiations support it, and any time a treaty limits the spread of nuclear weapons it is a good thing for all of humanity. Yet despite almost universal approval, it is having a very difficult time in the US Congress. No one has given a rational reason for the rejection of the treaty, simply because there isn’t one. The opponents are basing their arguments on irrational and untrue statements made to frighten the US public. At the risk of redundancy, not one logical or rational reason has been presented for rejection, yet opponents keep at it, with errors of omission, exaggeration, and outright lies. President Obama has meekly challenged opponents by asking them to explain their alternative to rejection. It is war. Those who want to reject the treaty, want a war between the US and Iran, and that is their purpose.

Any political expert would confirm, the strongest lobbying group in the nation, is by far AIPAC, a group that represents the right wing interests of Israel. AIPAC has become a right wing extension of the Netanyahu government, and certainly does not represent all American Jews, as polls show most American Jews support the treaty, but AIPAC has the clout, power, and money to force folks into line. AIPAC has exposed itself to the US public by being the only group who is opposed to this treaty >>>

Allan Prohibited from Leaving Hospital - Israel`s Supreme Court suspended the Administrative Detention of Mohammad Allan, after his prolonged hunger strike caused brain damage. But he is not truly free. The Public Prosecution told the Barzilai medical center that Allan is not allowed to leave, and a security guard was accordingly placed at the hospital entrance. Allan’s family was informed that if he left the medical center, he would be punished, and, if the family wanted to move him to another hospital, this must be coordinated by the Israeli security services. >>>

Abbas rival Dahlan calls for ouster of Palestinian leader - Mohammed Dahlan, accused of murder, financial corruption and defamation says Abbas decisions are 'null', 'void', 'illegal', as new elections for top body loom.

A prominent rival of president Mahmud Abbas called for the ouster of the veteran leader on Monday as Palestinians seek to organise a congress for the first time in nearly 20 years.

Mohammed Dahlan, once a leading figure in Abbas's Fatah party but now in exile in Dubai, took to his Facebook page to criticise the Palestinian president. His comments came after Abbas resigned Saturday as head of the Palestine Liberation Organisation's Executive Committee in a bid to force new elections for the top body. >>>

Observers say Mohammed Dahlan could be planning to use country as base to launch leadership challenge against Palestinian Authority leader - Ivan Angelovski in Belgrade and Lawrence Marzouk in London - Serbia’s government has quietly granted citizenship to Mohammed Dahlan, a key rival of the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, and adviser to the crown prince of Abu Dhabi.

Dahlan, his family and five key political supporters were all granted citizenship between February 2013 and June 2014, according to documents from the state’s official gazette analysed by the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN).

The government is able to grant citizenship during closed cabinet sessions to foreigners deemed to have served “state interests” without offering any detailed public explanation. Dahlan is credited with facilitating Abu Dhabi’s promised investment of billions of euros in Serbia. However, the government in Belgrade has refused to explain whether this is the reason for granting citizenship to him and 11 other Palestinians in the past two years. Seasoned Middle East observers have suggested that Dahlan could be planning to use Serbia as a base to launch his leadership challenge against Abbas, the current Palestinian Authority (PA) leader. >>>

Abbas: Dahlan Citizenship is ‘Serbia’s problem’ - The Palestinian President told BIRN he will not confront Serbia over its award of citizenship to his arch-rival, Mohammed Dahlan - whose ties to the Balkans are coming under scrutiny. - Ivan Angelovski, Lawrence Marzouk BIRN Ramallah  - The Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, has told BIRN he will not let Serbia’s decision to award citizenship to his chief rival ruin historic relations with an important ally.

In an exclusive interview, the 79-year-old leader declined to answer detailed questions about Dahlan, formerly his security chief but now his rival, preferring to concentrate on the stalled peace process and on relations with Israel and the US. But, while the President sidestepped issues related to his opponent, BIRN has learnt that investigations against Dahlan are ongoing, including a probe by the Palestinian anti-corruption council into his investments in Serbia and Montenegro.

Abbas lauded former Yugoslavia as “brothers” during the exclusive interview with BIRN from the Muqata, the new presidential headquarters that replaced Yasser Arafat’s destroyed compound. When pressed on Serbia’s favour to Dahlan, however, he said: “We have excellent relations [with Serbia]. Now, if they have some contacts with this man, it is not our question. It is their issue, their matter. >>>
