Videos: Brave Tamimi women of Nabi Saleh take down Israeli soldier assaulting injured child - Annie Robbins

A radical scene unfolded Friday after Israeli forces intercepted the weekly protest in the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh, Palestine against the illegal confiscation of their land and spring. The courageous actions of the Tamimi women of Nabi Saleh rescuing their captured child spread immediately on social media after the UK’s Daily Mail published a series of breathtaking photographs taken at the scene. The event was captured on video by Bilal Tamimi and Roya News TV.

As a masked and armed Israeli soldier chases down a hillside you can hear voices yelling, then the unmistakable sound of a screaming child. The boy appears in view as he turns to face the soldier. Screaming, the boy pivots then rushes past the soldier and up the hill through a mass of boulders as the soldier finally catches up with the boy and captures him. Placing the boy in a chokehold the soldier forces the struggling child over a bolder as cameras close in on the scene and record what’s happening. What follows, captured on video and camera, is a sight to behold. >>>

'What’s the number of your room, child?' - Attacking and imprisoning Palestinian children has shaped Palestinian generations for decades. The more rights-deprived the childhood, the more hungry for freedom adulthood will be. - Sawsan Khalife’

In this video, an Israeli soldier is seen chasing a Palestinian child with a broken arm during the weekly demonstration held in Nabi Saleh in the West Bank. The soldier holds him by the neck and pushes his face into the stones while the boy’s mother and sister, along with other Palestinian demonstrators, try to pull him away from.

It is always painful to see such images, but not surprising. According to the organization Defense for Children International, each year approximately 500 to 700 Palestinian children, some as young as 12 years old, are detained and prosecuted in the Israeli military court system. The most common charge is stone throwing.

While watching the child running from the soldier and crying for help, I wonder whether he knew what would happen to him if he were arrested. I wondered whether the children in the West Bank have a similar “Room Number 4” that the children in East Jerusalem know all too well. >>>

God is on Israel’s side, but not the United States, says Israel’s new U.N. ambassador - Philip Weiss - The new Israeli ambassador to the United Nations believes that Israel has God on its side but not the United States. In fact, U.S. policy has cost Israel “thousands of young lives.”

The appointment of the rightwing Israeli politician Danny Danon as ambassador is widely seen as an expression of contempt for diplomacy on the part of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a specific rebuke of President Obama, because Danon argues that Israel should annex the West Bank and force Palestinians to become citizens of Jordan.

But Danon’s beliefs go beyond rightwing political dictums to a religious understanding of Israel’s best friends. In his 2012 book, Israel: The Will to Prevail, Danon repeatedly quotes God, saying that God gave the land of Canaan to the Jews as an “everlasting possession” and God even went took the trouble to renname the land “Israel.”

He also states that Israel has only been hurt when it responded to pressure from the United States: Israel has served itself best by undertaking preemptive attacks, against Egypt and Iraq, rather than accepting American counsel to hold back– a view that applies to Iran as well. That country is similar to Nazi Germany and therefore must be attacked. Danon wrote: >>>

IDF warns deserters, initiates new sanctions - Around 3,000 IDF deserters receive text messages warning them of punishment, as army moves to legislate wide-ranging sanctions including refusal to issue driver's licenses, passports, and ID cards.

Yoav Zitun - The IDF recently sent warning messages to thousands of cell phones belonging to deserters, while also receiving approval from the Justice Ministry to initiate an amendment that would allow for the imposition of severe government sanctions.

The proposed sanctions include a ban on Driver's license, ID card, and passport renewals; as well as a denial of housing benefits and scholarships; and a ban on obtaining a gun license. The implementation of these new sanctions depends on the legislative process.  >>>

15% of West Bank settlers are American, study reveals - Approximately 20 Jews move into Arab neighborhood in East Jerusalem - New research suggests that 15 percent of the settler population in the West Bank are American Jewish immigrants. According to research by Dr Sara Yael Hirschhorn of Oxford University, there are currently 60,000 American Jews living in the settlements.

“This provides hard evidence that this constituency is strikingly over-represented, both within the settler population itself and within the total population of Jewish American immigrants in Israel,” Haaretz reported that Hirschhorn said at the Limmud conference in Jerusalem. It was not fully clarified if this was only American-born Jews, or also included those who had citizenship by descent.

Hirschhorn said that this contradicts the presumption within Israeli society that American immigrants have failed at home and have moved to Israel as an attempt to re-start their lives. However it appears that in fact many of them have come to the country due to political beliefs which lie to the right of the spectrum. >>>

Stop arming Israeli military units violating human rights - On August 1, 2014, Rafah’s streets were busy with residents emerging from shelter in anticipation of a 72-hour temporary truce set to begin at 8 a.m. that morning. The ceasefire never took shape as clashes broke out between an Israeli army reconnaissance unit and Palestinian fighters, which led to the capture of Israeli soldier Lieutenant Hadar Goldin.

Within the hour, Colonel Ofer Winter, commander of the Givati Brigade, initiated the Hannibal Directive, which authorizes the use of maximum force to prevent the capture of a missing soldier by enemy forces.

According to Amnesty International, an Israeli military inquiry determined that “more than 2,000 bombs, missiles and shells were fired during the entire day, including 1,000 in the three hours following the capture.”(1)

While an Israeli military forensic unit confirmed on August 2 that Goldin was dead, and the chief military rabbi issued a death certificate that evening, Israeli attacks on Rafah continued through August 4. At least 135 Palestinians lost their lives over these four days. Defense for Children International – Palestine (DCIP) confirmed that 82 children were among the dead.(2)

The Hannibal Directive permits indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks against civilians in complete violation of international law. Despite overwhelming evidence of war crimes, not one perpetrator has been held accountable. >>>

Why did a Jewish Day School student cry hysterically when she learned about the Deir Yassin massacre? - Philip Weiss - Here is an excellent new documentary about Israel education in American Jewish day schools. Between the Lines describes itself as a “deep-dive into how Jewish Day Schools teach Israel’s controversial narrative, and the students who emerge with quivering loyalty toward their community and the State.” The makers are Ali Kriegsman and Jana Kozlowski, and they say they want to motivate Jewish communities around the country, including “synagogues, camps, schools, programs – to stray from a whitewashed Israel narrative and instead engage alternative perspectives and current day complexities, criticisms, and accomplishments.”

The documentary is superb because it demonstrates beyond question that young Jews are being indoctrinated in a narrative of Israel’s formation that is inaccurate, and shows how the indoctrination originates in the need to protect Israel politically in the United States, and also in the trauma inside the Jewish community over the Holocaust.

I’ll ignore the fact that the makers say they “love” Israel in their p.r. material. The journalism here is first-rate. One of the reasons our website exists is because the editors came to understand years ago that most of the information Americans get on these issues is propaganda and there was a real opportunity for journalists to tell Americans what’s actually happening. Kriegsman and Kozlowski are working in that tradition of honest reporting, in this case documenting an intellectual scandal. >>>

On the Road to Tantura: Interview with Hala Gabriel - Stephen Shenfield - Tantura was a beautiful Palestinian fishing village 15 miles south of Haifa (pop. 1,700). In the early hours of May 23, 1948 it was attacked and occupied by the Alexandroni (Third) Brigade of the Haganah (32nd Battalion). Over 200 villagers, mostly unarmed young men, were massacred; others were taken prisoner and put to forced labor. Most of the survivors ended up in refugee camps in neighboring countries. Only one house was left partly standing. In June 1948 a kibbutz was established in the deserted village.

Hala Gabriel is a Palestinian-American filmmaker, a graduate of the California Institute of Arts and winner of the Silver Award of the International Houston Film Festival. She was born as a refugee to parents who had fled from Tantura (the house left partly standing had belonged to her family). She spent her earliest years in various places in Syria and was still a young child when her parents immigrated with her to the United States.

In 2010, on her second attempt, Hala managed to enter Israel and visit the site of her ancestral village. She also met relatives who had taken refuge in the nearby village of Fureidis, which had escaped destruction, and interviewed three of the men who had participated in the attack on Tantura. The title of the documentary on which she is working, Road to Tantura, refers to this journey. >>>
